A long weekend of thoughtful memories
A time to come together with those we love
Honor our great heroes who gave their lives for freedom—
Share time, food, family, friends,
And give thanks for our liberty.
A time to remember… the last words in the sonnet “The New Colossus” by poet Emma Lazarus (1883) inscribed at the main entrance to the pedestal of the Statue of Liberty.
“Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddle masses yearning to breath free,
The wrechted refuse of your teeming shore.
Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me,
I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”
“All we have of freedom, all we use or know –
This our fathers bought for us long and long ago.”
